Arizona Schools Math Standards Is There A Better Way

All states across the United States require standards that must be met in different subjects by specific grades, especially in reading and math. End of year testing is required for specific grades to ensure schools and students are meeting these standards.

The concern is that states, including the Arizona schools, are trying to teach everything at once to students, with teachers losing the ability to teach the important math concepts in depth. Otherwise, students are learning a little about everything (just enough to pass state tests) but not enough to actually use in the real world.

Many educators in the Arizona schools are concerned that they are being forced to teach for testing, rather than real in-depth learning that is needed in higher grades and college.

For example, the Arizona schools require second graders to know 77 math concepts by the end of that grade. That is a lot of concepts, and teachers are given no guidance from the Arizona schools on which concepts are the most important. That means that equal importance is given to all, and all must be sufficiently taught. In order to do this, Arizona schools would need to create mandatory day-by-day lesson plans, which they have not done.

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is a highly influential organization, whose recommendations are followed by most educators. Almost all math textbooks for kindergarten through eighth grade reference the council, also aligning with their recommendations.

In a report released in September, the council agrees with many Arizona schools educators that the state is trying to cover too much within one year, noting that some states require even more.

Council Executive Director Jim Rubillo points out that too many mandatory math concepts taught means very little in-depth learning by the students. They may be able to pass a test at the end of the year, but it is doubtful that many students will carry the concepts into higher learning without the repetition and in-depth instruction required. Too many concepts to teach leaves no time for in-depth instruction.

The council also released new recommendations for curriculum focal points. The recommendations narrow the focus to just three math concepts at each grade level with all instruction for each grade built around them. The council hopes states will enter into a discussion on this issue and consider their recommendations.

The Arizona schools begin revision of their math standards next spring and are considering the councils recommendations, according to Mary Knuck, state director of standards for the Arizona schools. If the Arizona schools follow the councils recommendations, it would mean a major overhaul of their current standards and testing methods.

The real challenge for Arizona schools teachers currently is not the vast array of standards that must be taught; however, the real challenge is to teach math for both real world applications and standardized testing. It must make sense in the real world, or it is wasted. Yet, Arizona schools students must be able to have instant recall in order to answer state test questions correctly. Hopefully, the council and the Arizona schools can together make more sense of the crucial math standards for the Arizona schools.

Slow Shutter Speeds and Long Exposure Photography

Many new cameras will come with built-in shutter speeds of up to 30 seconds or longer, which is enough for most long-exposure photography. Other cameras will have a B (bulb) setting that will keep the shutter open as long as you keep your finger on the shutter release button or a T (time) exposure setting that will keep the shutter open until you press the shutter release button a second time. Cameras with bulb settings can also be fitted with a locking cable release so that it isn't necessary to keep your finger on the shutter for long exposures. If your camera doesn't have a cable release, you can use the self-timer option found on most cameras. This will eliminate camera vibration from your hands.

A tripod, or something to rest your camera on, is essential because the camera must be completely still during the time that the shutter is open. If you want to make a fast-moving car blur as it speeds by you, a relatively fast shutter speed of 1/20 of a second may give you the results you are after, however, if you want to make stars in the nighttime sky look like glowing rings as the earth rotates, your exposure may last all night.

The light meter on your camera may not be able to accurately judge the best aperture setting for longer shutter speeds, especially in low-light situations, so your best bet is probably to "bracket." This means taking up to six pictures of the same subject, but doubling the shutter speed each time. This will give you a variety of effects and exposures and allow you to choose the best shot. In general, slow shutter speeds will allow a lot of light into the camera, which means that you will want to use a small aperture (ie. f/22) to avoid over-exposing the shot. In bright daylight it will be necessary to use the lowest ISO available and a neutral density filter to cut the light down.

Waterfalls: 4 seconds +

Is It Time for Wireless E-Commerce?

The answer is yes. According to Bill Watterson, author of Calvin and Hobbes, The problem with the future is that it keeps turning into the present. Businesses are well aware of mobile phones potential for wireless marketing, advertising, sales, and payments although many thought this potential would be realized somewhere down the road. But it seems like that future is now here.

Critical Mass

Almost a third of North Americans now say they could not live without their cell phone and these devices are rapidly evolving into more than a mere portable tool for voice communications. According to a recent study [AP 2006] Americans have become addicted to their cell phones, with four out of 10 adults aged 18 to 29 considering dropping their landline service. In fact, almost a third (29%) say they could not live without their cell phone. The mobile has reached critical mass.

Thirty-five percent of those surveyed say they send SMS text messages, including 65% of those ages 18-29 and 37% of those aged 30-49. At the same time, 18% say they have used or would like to use a mobile instant messaging service on their cell phone. Meanwhile, 38% say they would like to have desktop IMs from select contacts automatically forwarded to their mobile device, including 50% of those ages 18-29.

In terms of must-have features when buying a new handset, the top-runners are: mobile maps (51%), text messaging (48%), and a built-in camera (47%) top the list, followed by games (34%), mobile email (32%), and mobile search (31%).

New Applications

The new .MOBI top level domain is expected to eliminate some basic problems associated with mobile browsing of ordinary Web sites, including large graphics and multimedia content. The new standards will ensure content works for Web browsing, mobile messaging, and device compliance on mobile devices. [Sullivan 2006]

Internet access via mobile phones is actually outpacing wireless access from a notebook PC in many countries with 56% of global mobile phone users browsing the Internet or downloading email in 2005. In Japan 92% of users went online via their mobiles. Rates are high in France and UK as well but flattening in North America. [eMarketer 2006]

About 20% of mobile phone users are already receptive to relevant advertising, if done correctly. Apparently understanding the trade-off of ads for services, over a third of users said they would also be willing to provide advertisers some personal information. [Burns 2005]

Podcasting and cell phones already offer a powerful synergy. Recently Mobilcast announced that it will help NPR deliver 45 of its podcasts to mobile phone users. NPR has had nearly 18 million downloads of its podcasts since its launch at the end of August 2005. [NPR 2006]

Mobile Video

According to an eMarketer report, This is the year that carriers, content providers and marketers are sitting up, taking notice and starting to experiment and invest in mobile television initiatives.

JupiterResearch also finds that the mobile video market is expected to grow by roughly eight times its 2005 revenue size by the end of the decade. In 2005 revenues from mobile video content reached $62 million. By 2010, the number is expected to reach $501 million. [Burns 2006]

From a technical point-of-view, the two key developments for mobile TV are growth in smartphones and growth of advanced 3G networks. Although adoption has been slow to date, these will move mobile TV past the pilot stage toward critical mass and finally to mass-market penetration.

A new study from London-based research company Red Bee Media and British digital media research agency iBurbia indicates that consumers will pay for video they value and are also willing to accept some advertising. [Video Content 2006]

But already consumer interest bodes well for the mobile industry as vendors use different business models to try and tap into this consumer demand," said Julie Ask, Research Director at JupiterResearch. "The challenge is not interest but rather finding the correct mix of premium content and price points." The Psychological Reality of Positive Thought and Complex Thought

A whole new school of psychiatry has grown up around the development of positive thinking. The key is intercepting negative thoughts. Surprisingly, no matter how positive we think we are, many of us have internal, mostly negative chatter that ties up thecerebral circuits all day long. Much of this chatter is actually pretty idiotic if you stop and listen to it. Most of the time we're simply ripping ourselves apart. The more negative our mood, the more we're apt to nag ourselves. The science of positive thought can be learned through certain therapies, of which cognitive therapy is one example.

Cognitive therapy teaches you to catch the negative thoughts in this gnawing pitter-patter and substitute much more reasonable,reassuring, and, most important, more accurate thoughts. During cognitive therapy, the therapist uses various techniques of talk therapy and behavioral prescriptions to help the patient alleviate and change his or her negative thought patterns and beliefs. For example, a salesman fails to get through to an account on a sales call and actually encounters a very rude rebuff from the secretary. His inner voice might say, "See, you're no damned good, never were." He'd do better to catch that negative thought, judge it, and turn it into a more accurate reply such as: "Gee it was early and the secretary must have had a bad night. Her boss probably had a bad night too and she was taking it out on me. I'm actually a pretty good salesperson; I'll just try again at a better time of day." This is cognitive therapy at work.

Let's take a closer look at cognitive therapy as proof of the concept that positive thought does truly change the brain.

Cognitive Therapy

Cognitive therapy is based on the theory that people's emotions are controlled by their views and opinions of the world. Depression is the result when patients constantly emotional attack themselves, expect to fail, make incorrect assessments of what other persons think of them, feel hopeless, and have a very negative attitude toward day to day living, the world, and the future.

You may think that "talk" therapy is all nonsense, but consider this. Using the accredited standard PET scan, researchers noticed that patients who engaged in cognitive therapy had changes just as marked on the PET scan as patients taking Prozac. This shows that positive thinking on its own can change the way your brain functions, a true revolution in modern psychiatry. This "talk therapy" can be at least as good as drugs. Why? First, after repeated talk therapy, new and important connections are created between one set of neurons and another. That means that your brain is fundamentally, even if ever so slightly, changing. Second, even without drugs, cognitive therapy increases levels of neurotransmitters that battle depression and anxiety.

Cognitive therapy can change the brain circuitry, concludes Richard Davidson, Ph.D., after reviewing hard data. For example, it's been shown that in obsessive-compulsive behavior, cognitive therapy can produce changes in circuitry - actual biological changes in the brain.

Susan C. Vaughan, M.D., convinced of the effectiveness of talk therapy, has written a book named after Freud's phrase, The Talking Cure. "Talking changes the structure of the brain itself; the nerve cells end up with different connections so they grow differently and the new connections form new structures. It is through the change in connections that you learn and that's how you store information; that's how you make links between cells that weren't connected before and there's knowledge in that link," Dr. Vaughan says. So talking makes new connections between brain cells; experience changes the shape of and connections between brain cells. The cerebral cortex and the association cortex (in the parietal lobes) are mainly implicated in "talk therapy"; those are the highest level of cortex - they put together the most information from that part of the brain. After several years of psychotherapy, the brain may look different; but because changes are occurring between neurons, at a very small cell-to-cell level, they're hard to see. Still, these cerebral cortex changes are longer lasting than medications because you're changing the structure of your brain, whereas medication is only changing brain chemistry. In treatment of depression, the best results are achieved with a combination of drugs and psychotherapy, because the two are synergistic.

The Argument for Complex Thought

A new publishing industry has grown up around the concept of dumbing down complex ideas. One sees that in many aspects of life in America, where nearly everything has to be nugget-sized and simple, from our basic foods to our music. The dumbing-down effect would have us watching Seinfeld reruns instead of plowing through important new technological information, philosophical argument, or historical texts that could improve our minds and further our career. Our approaches to diet and exercise are so timid that it's a wonder we're not all hopelessly overweight and out of shape. This great timidity in America is transforming us into a nation of Iemmings. There is a much broader world out there - not one that is more intimidating, just more rewarding, a world that challenges us to master greater complexity.

Simply put, the greatest joy in life can be undertaking and mastering complex activities such as learning a new language or listening to and understanding a symphony or studying the classics or mastering an unfamiliar historical period. In Part One of the book, we looked at all the comparatively simple ways of improving mood and brain energy. No one, however, wants to be the happy fool. In fact many believe that happiness is a non attainable condition ... that we can never be free of yearnings and anxieties. But we can achieve great satisfaction by developing the positive thought that encourages us to tackle complex tasks and succeed. That hard work pays off quickly.

As we master complex thoughts and develop greater successes, work actually becomes far easier. Fran Shea says: "At the beginning of my career I spent a huge number of hours at work. I could spend up to fifteen hours a day working. But I was absolutely in love with my job. There was nothing about my job I didn't like. I had way more ideas than I could fulfill. I was lucky. I was in a business that was booming. I was there at the right time." Now she is president of E! Entertainment Networks and one of the top women in broadcasting. Dr. Richard J. Haier, of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of California at Irvine, has used brain imaging to measure brain activity and metabolism. The student subjects in his laboratory were tested at the video game Tetris. These students were scanned during the first day of practice, when they showed great metabolic activity. They were scanned again after two months of practice. Although the subjects had increased their abilities sevenfold, the scans showed their metabolic activity to have lessened dramatically. So the study showed that the more gifted we become at something, the fewer circuits in the brain we use. In other words, we're able to do the same activity with less effort. While Tetris is not a sophisticated or complex mental activity, the experiment does show that success in conquering mental complexities is a case of the brain working smarter, not harder.

In future articles I'll look at specific steps to build a strong pattern of positive thought. Here's a brief road map.

Step 1: Be an Optimist

Learn the heart of a positive mental attitude by transforming yourself into a tough-minded optimist. This is rigorous science, not pop psychology.

Step 2: Seize the Moment

Shed your anxieties and the distractions that pull you from success by learning the skills of accomplished actors and committing fully to the moment at hand.

Step 3: Play to Your Strengths

Take a unique test to determine the way your personality is wired. Then learn to use that knowledge to relate better to others. Learn how to chase success based on how your brain is wired.

Step 4: Learn Emotional Broadcasting

By learning emotional broadcasting, learn to convert those around you to allies who will give you the emotional support and team strength you need to succeed. "Emotional Broadcasting" is the "networking" of the twenty-first century, literally changing the emotions of those around you.

Step 5: Look to the Hereafter

Learn prayer to gain an even greater sense of optimism and positive thought. As with optimism, the new interest in spirituality is based on firm scientific studies.

Step 6: Create a Blueprint for Success

This final step will help you channel and focus all your mental energy and positive thought into creating and embodying your life's story.

Just remember that practice exams are meant to jog your mind more so than they are to give you answers to your tests. The act of answering the questions will jar something in your mind when it is time to take the real test. As long as the subject material that you choose is very close to what you are studying, you may find these are quite helpful. They really cant take the place of proper study and notes taking in class, but you will find that they will help you out.

Arrhythmias are caused by a disruption of the normal electrical conduction system of the heart. The four chambers of the heart are supposed to contract in a very specific, coordinated manner. However, if a problem occurs anywhere along the conduction system of the heart, an arrhythmia can occur.

The Plus Size Clothing Nightmare

I've worn plus size clothing most of my adult life. And let me tell you, clothes shopping has really been an agravating experience to say the least. You go to the mall and visit the one store that carries sizes more than 1X. You browse the racks and find a nice pink blouse you'd really love to buy, and they DO have plus sizes, but YOUR SIZE PINK BLOUSE IS MISSING. ARRGH!

Or, you might find a pretty black bra that you'd love to have, but they are out of the 42DD. Pure frustration.

At first glance it looks like the big and beautiful store has a lot of items, but when you take into account that each item probably is displayed with 4-6 sizes, there really isn't that much in one store. Even the big chain stores like Target, Walmart and K-Mart really have a limited supply of plus size clothing. And most of it isn't very stylish.

And why do all other stores always put the women's plus size clothing section right next to the Maternity section? I'm offended by that as a large woman, and I'd be offended by that as well if I were a pregnant woman. You have to make sure that you aren't checking out the clothing that belongs in the maternity section.

Speaking of maternity wear, I know from personal experience that finding maternity clothes as a larger woman is murder! I seems that only the skinny girls get pregnant as far as the clothing manufacturers think. You have to find a special store that carries nothing but plus size maternity clothing, and lots of it.

To add to the frustration, they put the Petites section on the other side of the Women's section. Come on...no big woman wants to shop next to all those perky little skinny girls.

It's all so darn frustrating. But there is a solution. Shop online. More items, and more sizes, and total freedom to choose in your own home. An online store doesn't have space restrictions and can display a thousand items with relative ease.

That's easier said than done. Some online plus size women's clothing stores carry a limited line. You have to visit many online shops to find what you want. It's hard to find an online plus size fashion site that offers bigger size shirts, pants, suits, etc., from many designers and retail stores. Consumer Demand Drives Development of New DSL Technology

With ever growing demand for better and faster access to the internet by consumers, major technology companies are rushing to develop new technologies to meet these demands. But there have been problems along the way.

One of the first problems to be considered in developing new technology is the current infrastructure or currently available equipment on which broadband services are supplied. Most all DSL service in the world travels over standard phone line, which in most cases has been in place for many years. The lines are basically straight copper, in some cases there may be somewhat newer twisted pair copper lines, but none the less still pretty much standard copper telephone wire.

DSL was originally designed to be used over just such lines with the aid of line filtering, and has for the most part done its job very effectively. But with the increase in demand for high speed access, companies are finding it difficult to supply the increases in speed and reliability that consumers are demanding. One of the major limitations of DSL is travel distance. DSL looses speed and reliability the further away from the companies switching or exchange center. At the exchange, a digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM) terminates the DSL circuits and aggregates them, where they are handed off onto other networking transports. Ideally users need to be within 15,000 feet from the DSLAM server, using current copper line technology.

Other transport systems in many cases may well be fiber-optic lines that can handle thousands of times more bandwidth then can standard copper transmission lines. As companies upgrade systems, and more and more DSLAM terminals are supplied with fiber-optic access. DSL service to consumers will get better. The hope is of one day having fiber optic lines in place completely up to consumer use points, or in the home. To have a fiber optic infrastructure in place would open up vastly improved network connection abilities, but it isnt something that will happen any time soon. Upgrading systems will take many years.

In 2004 a technology was developed by Texas Instruments that helped the world leap ahead onto the internet superhighway. The technology called Uni-DSL which means One DSL for universal service brought new elements to the world of DSL. Uni-DSL made it possible to add voice and video to data that could be transmitted effectively over a single digital subscriber line. It also helped local companies stream line their services while adding to the effectiveness of DSL service over all. VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol was born of this new technology, as was on demand or live streaming video for the consumer

There are several competing forms of DSL, each adapted to specific needs in the marketplace. Some forms of DSL are widely used standards and some are proprietary. Due to existing infrastructure not all are available in all places. Each standard has its own unique equipment and protocol requirements. ADSL or Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line is the most common type in use today. Other types include SDSL or Symmetric DSL and VDSL referred to as Very High-Bit-Rate DSL. Both ADSL and VDSL have new technology associated with them that change their nomenclature slightly to ADSL2+ and VDSL2. These two technologies are both in use and are being further developed. Depending on who you talk to, ADSL2+ is the best for users with distances further then 3,000 feet from the DSLAM center and VDSL2 for those in the short run distances.

The focus now seems to be on the upstream side of Broadband access. With more and more people working from home, and more families communicating over the internet, it doesnt take long to realize that although down stream speeds might be great, upstream or uploading information is still not meeting the consumer demand level.

If you have every tried to share a video from a camcorder with family members across the internet, you have probably noticed that it still isnt as easy as you might like. The demand for upstream bandwidth has come to center stage and is a large part of what is driving todays research and development.

But with every change, time is needed for it to filter into point of use. Every new protocol demands change in every aspect of how Broadband access is delivered to the consumer. From the program that needs to be written that will accommodate the new setups, the machinery that handles every aspect of the physical delivery system, to the modem you have that connects your computer to the internet. Everything needs to work together.

What will tomorrow bring for consumers in the way of Broadband access? Only tomorrow will tell. Some believe that we may have reached the limit of speed that can be achieved using existing infrastructure and until new fiber-optic lines are more readily available that speeds wont improve much. Yet new ideas and technology are still being developed to help bring better internet access to the world over existing infrastructure.

Will there be fiber-optic lines in every home soon? Someday, most likely, but not in the very near future. At present it just isnt cost effective for companies to implement the kind of changes needed to upgrade everyone to the latest and greatest types of DSL systems, but slowly as new systems are built and upgrades are made, where possible, fiber-optic cables are being put in place. With each upgrade, with each new system structure built, the goal of fiber-optic lines in every home becomes more of a reality for us all.

So is the DSL connection that you have now as fast as it will get? Today, maybe yes, but most assuredly the future will improve it, and who knows, tomorrow may be the day.
